Keepin' It Rhyl by Mark McNulty

  • Rhyl_30
These photographs were originally shot for Plastic Rhino magazine and it's 'Keepin' It Rhyl' issue which was a guided walking tour of North Wales' finest resort. The issue of the magazine was originally to be called Twin Towns and was going to be split between Berlin and Rhyl. However, somebody (Tony Crean) came up with the title 'Keepin' It Rhyl' and not being able to decide something as good as that for Berlin, we decided to run with Rhyl throughout the whole magazine. Since then I've been back at different times to photograph the crazy golf course for my 'Rocketships & Windmills' book and to use the place as a backdrop on fashion and bands shoots. The latest news is that Rhyl's notorious West End is due to be regenerated so I'm about to start going back to continue with these photographs and maybe even produce a book at some point in the future. Thanks Mark McNulty

Champions League

Just added a new photo album of a project started by Liverpool based photographer Imke Oppenkamp . The album's not quite finished and it will be getting a few updates with more images so keep checking back.  It's down there on the left somewhere!

the godfather

Peter Blake, who needs no introduction, has a career retrospective at The Tate in Liverpool. Don't miss it.  And whilst you're there, make sure you check out Centre Of The Creative Universe : Liverpool and the Avant-Garde which includes some classic photographs by Martin Parr, Dr Vanley Burke and Tom Wood.  Also at Albert Dock is the recently opened Site gallery and their new show is brought to you by the people behind Mercy Magazine. And if you go after August 23rd, you can fit in a visit to the new Slavery Museum.

RGB

Popcultured will, at some point, have it's own website though we are quite enjoying the blog version for now.  One of the first things we want to put up is a collection of images that contain only the colours red, green and blue so feel free to get in touch and send us some images which will go up in a group show gallery.  This image is by Matt Wardle of Black & Ginger.

Get Your Kicks

Whilst Gerd Kittel's book 'The Final Cut : Route 66' is my favourite photographic book on the lost American highway, I'm always checking out a site or 2 with more photos and here's my latest by Martin Mathis.  Photograph copyright Marin Mathis.

Found shoe

A friend used to collect found shoes and I've photographed a few in my time.
Saw this one last week and the fact that the name's been doctored made it a winner.

Another Late Night in a shop.

Viv Tuesday saw the launch of Another Late Night Magazine's latest issue on the theme of show offs.  An exhibition including most of the content of the magazine, plus a whole lot more, is on display upstairs in Microzine on Bold Street.

Turning The Place Over

Turning Turning The Place Over is a new piece of work by the artist Richard Wilson and it launches on June 20th in Moorefields in Liverpool. The work consists of an 8 metres diameter ovoid cut out of the side of a building which then rotates above the street.  The work will be on until the end of 2008 and then I presume the building will be getting demolished. Though I would like to see him put it back together again.

Black & Ginger

Just as landscape gardeners don't cut the grass when they get home, great design agencies are usually rubbish at updating their own websites.  Which is why Black & Ginger are still 'promising' that their new site will be up any day now.  I'm sure it'll be worth the wait but, in the meantime, the blog is keeping us up to date and well worth checking out!

Bold Street

Whilst not quite Liverpool's answer to Portobello Road or whatever it is that the Daily Post is trying to say, Bold Street is still cool and a sort of creative hub for the city.  And all this is to celebrated by FACT Centre in a 3 year programme that's kicking off with an exhibition in it's media lounge and various online activities including a blog and it's own Flickr gallery.  So check it out and consider adding your own images.

Vanilla Days

Peter Carr is a talented young Liverpool based photographer with a photoblog that we reckon you should all sign up for 'cos it's amazing and he's also going to be contributing some work to Popcultured in the not too distant future.
